Aloha all...
As I said in earlier Artmails, I am in the process of going through my stored boxes, papers, etc., photographing what I want to remember but not store and getting photos of what I will continue to store. I showed some photos in Artmail 147c from the early nineties when I was Boomerang Art painting and flying boomerangs at Polihale Beach on Kaua'i. Kekaha, which is at the other end of that long beach is where I now live in 15B.
In got the idea of using palm fronds to make masks in 1995. I got my HP desktop computer, digital camera, etc. and began making web pages using the allowed "free" 5 MBs in 1998. In 2002, I switched to my current web hosting company and registered my "boomerangart.com" domain. I think all the web pages since then make up the Artmails. There has been a continuity through the years.
In Menu 2 are links to the web pages I made when traveling but limited to the 5 MBs web space I had at the time. I have yet to put photos from Europe and other travels in this website because the slides are stored on the mainland and I must scan them first. (I will talk about my planned West Coast mainland safari in a later Artmail. Anyway, I will spend time on the mainland going through stored stuff, taking photos, and tossing stored stuff there. I should have a good system going by then). A problem is that I find diversions stored away waiting for me to deal with them. Here's how it happens:
...
Instead of tossing those cocopalm fibers, I diverted a time focus to the PF Greenbacks.
...
The other morning after I awakened but before I got started, I knew I was going to go through the "Palm Frond Faces" box.
...
...
I throught that I would be throwing most of what is in that box away after I took photos. I had already photographed one of the boomerang boxes, just from the outside. I have now looked at only four of the boomerangs and many possibilities, that I had thought about in the past, popped into my head. Things that I could do, now, on the Internet with this website. Here's are three shots of the boomerang box with an early Aloha Rang, a Rainbow Rang and below it an Artrang with one of Lorilyn's Dreamscapes silk-screened onto a boomerang (I'll talk about these in a future Artmail), and an Artrang started by me on a boomerang that I had hand-shaped:

The first "art" of mine that I tore up and threw away in this project was the logo design I drew for the Rainbow Rang trademark that never happened (long story). Now, there are just photos to remember it by:

A commitment to toss.
...
This page isn't about boomerangs...it's about palm frond faces. I had already decided to toss the cocopalm flower parts that I used to make "spikey-headed" palm frond faces:

The next box in line was the palm frond faces box:
...
I had forgotten what was in this box until I opened it.
...
There were experiments in that box, but I didn't follow through with some. You can see that that face on the left looks a lot like Yfam (Your friend and mine)...

Most of the palm fronds I let dry before carving and working on them. The two above were carved while still wet. As they dried they would bend and twist into weird shapes. Here is one that I tried to carve the same way after it was too dry:
...
Not the way to carve one.
...
I also did some where I put in cowrie shell parts for teeth and when the palm frond dried, the shells were locked in. I was planning to use puka shells for eyes.

Kanaloa...(PFP No. 1)...came from this generation...makaweli and Kona-style images.

Here's the first mask I painted using a palm frond base from the coconut tree at 9C. It was done before I learned how to properly prepare the palm frond for painting. The palm frond bases from Polihale are much better to use because they are not so thick and dry out a lot thinner and lighter.

Here are some more palm frond faces and masks out of the box:

A small, strange-shaped coconut.

There are four palm fronds cleaned and ready for gesso...

...and six with one or more old coats of gesso already...

...plus this one. I think I was planning a "Talking Stick" with this one...

This mask wasn't in the box, but will replace the Old Lady in storage.

Old palm frond faces and masks back in the box.
...
To be stored until...???
...
I'm not planning to finish of these palm fronds unless I receive an offer of the right sort from a potential sponsor.
I'm going to continue with my project of sorting through all the stuff I have stored, taking photos then tossing or continue saving items.
Aloha, Art
