Aloha all...

I haven't been using my camera much this month. I have plenty of other things going on that don't lend themselves to taking photos. The first shot of the year was on Pali's birthday...January 10th. Quite a few times in past Artmails, this palm frond face appears. I guess we could say Yfam represents "The Good Ranger."

No more photos until the 22nd. Kirk, "The Captain," is having a birthday party on the 25th at a Kekaha Beach pavilion. Back in the '90s, as Kirk was sitting in a chair, I started dabbing paint on a palm frond that was already coated with gesso for about 20 minutes. It turned out looking so much like Kirk that everyone recognized it without being told and I never got around to completing it. I decided I would search through the stored palm frond faces, get that one, clean it and spray acrylic clear on it and give it to Kirk as it was on his birthday.

I had to move things around to find it. Here's a shot of the couch for couchsurfers...

It wasn't with the mainly unfinished palm frond faces.

Then, I looked in the box that had mainly Purple Feather People in it...

Of course...it was the bottom one.

The palm frond face was not in good enough condition to do what I had planned. So, I decided to "touch it up."

On the 25th I met Amanda, a couchsurfer from Wisconsin visiting a former classmate living on Kaua'i, who wanted to check out the west side and she contacted me through couchsurfing. I had planned going out to Polihale, but when Amanda heard comments from people about the condition of the road and saw the road, she didn't feel right about taking the bumpy, dirt road to an officially closed park in a rental car.

It turns out that it was a good choice not to go. A new gate was in the process of being put up before the Hangman Tree, blocking access to Polihale and to Queen's Pond! Rangers were issuing citations to campers for "camping in a closed park." It would have been a real bummer if we had gone out there. and lucky that the sky above Koke'e was beginning to clear.
