Aloha all...

When it got light enough, I put on a shirt, combed my hair, went out the door and took this one shot for today's index page.

This past week I've taken very few photos. I plan on shooting new photos of the Purple Feather People during the day today. Some of the PFPs will continue to change as I add the headband designs and another coat of acrylic paint or other touch-up. I have to get them somewhat ready because Tashi is putting on the following at her place next month:

From past Artmails, you can get an idea of what Tashi's garden looked like up to now. It's going to be something else on 9-11. Two artist friends are having a show at the Kaua'i Museum during September:

Mercede's website is here. You can see Mizu in an Artmail here.

Back in 1993, after Hurricane Iniki, I was living in Tumu Nu at Polihale, with a HUD temporary disaster housing voucher wasting away in my wallet. I could live any place in the United States or its territories (except one), but I didn't want to leave Kaua'i and there was so much hurricane damage, that there were no rentals available. On May 18th, I went to the Koloa Library to see a video presentation on the Cook Islands. Mercedes wasn't going to the presentation, but happened to be in the parking lot. We talked story. She was opening a gallery in Koloa and wanted me to go check it out the next day. I told her about the hassles with the rangers at Tumu Nu and that my HUD voucher's last day was the next day...the 19th.

Tumu Nu...outside the state park. My home for 11 months.

Tumu Nu. Walter, Clifford, Jude, and Erica. My tent is in back...I made the wall for the platform. The rocks were piled in this area when they were bulldozed out of what was to become a sugar cane field across the road. That's why the cane road went around the area of rocks. It was a junk place within the cane company lease of Hawaiian Homes land, adjacent to, but outside of Polihale State Park. I started Tumu Nu on October 7, 1992. Yes, there's a story.

....

I got distracted there. Back to Mercedes. She said her brother was staying in the cottage at her house. It usually was a rental. She would rent it to me through HUD. The next day, we went to the HUD office, did the paper work and I was going to be Mercedes' tenant! That rental would be for 1 1/2 years. Check it out in these old photos:

That's the same chair that was in Tumu Nu...painted.

My bedroom was in there...I used my mosquito net...every night.

It wasn't all fun and games. Mercedes worked hard getting her Art & Soul Gallery ready for the Grand Opening.

That's a younger Boomerang Art straightening that painting as Mercedes shot the photo.

Kolo's sculpture and Lorilyn's early art back there.

I have some more photos, but this is enough of the Art & Soul grand opening. The wood sculpture is by Kolo Kai. Here is a photo of him preparing her for the opening at Tumu Nu and two earlier photos:

The Princess and the Unicorn...Milo wood.

....

It is a sad story. The Princess and the Unicorn was stolen many years ago. We don't have any idea of where she stays.

RJ likes his haircut.

....

RJ and his family had been camping, so he hadn't been around for a while. I was working at my notebook and he was using the desktop in the other room. After about a half hour, he said "G'bye, Uncle Art" and was off. He is very good about shutting down the computer when he's pau...but this time he forgot! I was surprised. So, next time he comes over to use the computer, my answer will be..."not today"... then we'll talk about it. He'll go away with a soda or a couple of fig bars...his choice.

....

I did take two trial photos of PFPs. (Above, I said I was going to take PFP photos that day...I still haven't gotten to it). Here are those two:

Mich, the CouchSurfer from Paris, arrives this coming week. He is in Japan right now. (I am going to put this online right now, then talk about CouchSurfing in Artmail 117b).
