This past week has been rainy or cloudy over most of Kaua'i. The west side was where the sun has been shining so a lot of people have been using Kekaha Beach (The sand stretches all the way to Polihale). Most days, I will check out the satellite photos to see what the weather may be like. The trade winds tend to blow from the northeast. The west side and the south shore tends to be in the rain shadow formed after the moisture-laden clouds drop their rains on the mountains in the center of the island not leaving much moisture for the leeward side. Mt. Wai'ale'ale (5148 ft.) averages more rainfall than any other place on earth. In this satellite photo, that I copied on the 29th, you can see the direction the clouds are moving and the absence of clouds on the leeward side of Kaua'i.

This satellite photo of Kaua'i was taken on a mostly sunny day. The breeze is coming from the opposite direction and you can see the few clouds on the west side of the island.
Tashi's house is near that little point on the shore directly below that bigger clump of clouds.

I was at Tashi's the day before the weather satellite photo was taken. It rained and we were happy for it. I had my camera so, as I was leaving for 15B, I decided to take some in-the-rain photos. All the other photos at Tashi's have been on the usual sunny days. Here are some photos of the unusual:

...But better, I received an email from Doug at Rainbow Retreat in Nimbin, Australia. With it were two photos of a pair of travelers whom I met at Polihale during Captain Kirk's birthday. (See Artmail 88 from about the middle of the page). They made it to Rainbow Retreat and met Doug. The best for them from Nimbin and on their journey.
