Aloha all...

I'm behind on writing emails that I should be sending, like to couchsurfers Doug (I've got my tickets to Coolangatta and back), Birgit, and Shauna, so now I'll use my Artmails which, in the long run, saves time. I have a lot of projects going on plus fun breaks. I have not been taking many photos since I have been scanning family slides and photos.

I learned that to obtain a visa to enter Australia, when one is "aged 70 and older," a "proforma" must "be completed by medical practitioner as directed" with attached photo signed by the doctor.

Before Scott's birthday in a couple of days, I found most of the photos of my Washington DC trip with Scott MacD and Julie in 1987 in Scott's VW van. We partied with Hurricane Floyd on Key West in October of 1987. I think my camera got ripped off when we stopped to check the bodysurfing along Florida's coast. I have mental images of Key West, New Orleans and beyond, but so far, no photos found. I'm going to email the one's he would like to him. Here is a preview for later...

This shot covered it for a lot of the scenery we experienced.

I walked through The Mall and beyond while doing my thing in Washington DC. Here are two shots...

It takes "magic" to avoid the crowds.

Earlier this month, I received a surprise phone call from a bro' I worked with as marine technicians with Scripps Institution of Oceanography half a century ago! He and friends were staying in Hanalei vacationing on Kaua'i. I was in the phone book. I hadn't seen him since about a quarter century ago. Yes, way back then, I used to snorkel for abalone and lobster (and bodysurf, party, etc.) with...

.....

Bob Kiwala...who came out of retirement in Rarotonga, to become the Chief Marine Collector for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He arrived at LAX on a morning of the Playboy Jazz Festival in the Hollywood Bowl and I was to pick him up. I had some box seat tickets so, poor Bob, had to put up with a terrible culture shock. There were twice as many people in the Hollywood Bowl as were living on Rarotonga. (The music was great, tho'). He had terrible jet lag. He found a place in the bushes and got some needed sleep.

I may have some slides of trip we took to the almost completed Monterey Bay Aquarium, Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco, and Tiburon Marine Lab, but I am not going to look for those slides now. I wasn't much of a "picture-taker" back in the 1950's so I don't have many photos of when I worked at Scripps (SIO). I do have a lot of mental "instant video replays" of those times and friends.

Last summer, I posted some photos that were in this package:

......

......

I got that package out and separated the photos in it. Among the San Diego and Scripps-time photos, there was one developed in July 1956 of the little apartment I first lived in when I started working at SIO. It was on Rosemont Street in La Jolla about a half mile from Windansea Beach ($50/month). When I moved in, I took this photo with my Brownie Hawkeye "for the record"...

......

It was behind the garage and included what is in the right half of the photos with a door.

......

Here is a "for the record" photo of the first new car that I ever bought...a 1957 VW Beetle. It is parked in front of the landlord's house:

I took my Hawkeye camera with me on my first oceanographic cruise on the RV Paolina-T, a converted purse seiner fishing boat. I did not know whether I would get sea-sick or not. Here are a few of the photos taken on our way to the station off San Miguel Island anchored in 1000 fathoms of water for about a dozen days.

......

......

......

The Paolina-T was anchored in one thousand fathoms depth and the RV Orca, a converted whaler, was sailing a one-mile square around us. The Paolina-T was in the middle of the square. Marine technicians on both vessels were taking observations on a schedule searching for (and finding) hypothesized deep-down waves that are not apparent on the surface. It was boring without many snapshot opportunities. For some of the time it was like being becalmed. When the seas got rough, I was one of the few who didn't get seasick.

......

....................

......

I can't remember the reason, but during the rough seas, the Orca stopped sailing its square and hove to closer to the Paolina-T.

......

......

When the seas calmed down, some kind of exchange was made between the vessels...probably a pump repair part or replacement for the Orca.

......

......

That wasn't an exciting cruise, but it was my first and I didn't have to worry about seasickness. I didn't take many photos with my Hawkeye.

I guess this is as good a place to put some of the photos from the time period (November 1956 to April 1957) that the photos were developed (the date is on the print). I'll do that in Artmail 155b. Bob Kiwala didn't arrive at Scripps until after this time period, but I'll post some photos as background of pioneer marine technicians' work and play.

Back to Bob Kiwala. I bought a copy of David Powell's A Fascination for Fish and am over halfway through it. It's a great read and hard to put down. Bob figures in prominently throughout the book.

......

..............

......

Bob Kiwala is truly a man of the sea. He has a Micronesian tattoo and a Marquesian tattoo both illustrating that fact in their respective cultures. They were done the old way. "Traditional tattooing tools consist of a comb with needles carved from bone or tortoise shell, fixed to a wooden handle. The needles are dipped into a pigment made from the soot of burnt candlenut mixed with water or oil. The needles are then placed on the skin and the handle is tapped with a second wooden stick, causing the comb to pierce the skin and insert the pigment."

......

Bob complained that he had been on Kaua'i for four day and had not yet been in the ocean. We didn't have time to go to a bodysurfing beach, so I took him to the beach nearby so he could get in the water.

......

......

Kiwala is in great shape. He effortlessly swam out to the reef and back finishing with about 20 meters of butterfly.

......

Ahhhhh...much better..

......

The rest of the crew...Nora and Mike and Karen.

......

......

Aloha nui loa.

......

It was too short of a visit, but we sure won't wait 25 years for the next get-together. Visiting with Bob brought back a lot of memories as did the old photos. In Artmails 155b and 155c I'll put some photos and information from my two years as a marine technician at SIO. They include my second cruise which was on RV Orca...

......

The Orca was a whaler before and that's where the harpoon gun was mounted.

..........

and my first expedition cruise. It happened in March of 1957, the Sea of Cortez expedition...a coveted Gulf of California cruise. It was on RV Black Douglas, the Fish and Wildlife Service's converted-yacht research vessel.

..........

Read the Black Douglas' History HERE.
