Aloha all...

[I was planning to have this Artmail online be the 11th, but a computer problem has developed that I haven't been able to eliminate after working on it yesterday and doing a scan and defrag last night. What happens is my laptop just shuts down suddenly on its own then restarts and goes through a long scan before restarting Windows. If I don't save my work after each little addition, I can lose it from the automatic shutdown...I had to redo this paragraph! Is this a virus attack?]

...

First, I add some of the few photos from last week:

Jeanne has been packing to move to Lawai...Clifford's new neighbor. She stopped by 15B for breaks and to use the freezer. Here are some shots of Jeanne:

In the late 90s, I was living in Kekaha Ha'aheo 9C. At that time, there was a coconut palm which was my friend. I used various parts of the tree for art projects. The tree was cut down on the sly (I still have the web pages of the story saved to add to this web site sometime). Anyway, here are three photos:

I used the fiber that helps hold the palm frond onto the tree in various ways after it was cleaned and trimmed.

Even though the tree is gone, I still have some of its parts stored in 15B. I decided to use a sheet of fiber to make a birthday greeting for Kolo. I was also testing the fiber sheets for other art projects. Here's how it went:

The focus of these Artmails is going to change a little. A CouchSurfer from France will be using 15B as a home base while seeing and experiencing Kaua'i. I will be introducing him below, but photos taken during his visit will be in September Artmails. Preparations for Kanaloa's Safari at the beginning of 2005 is ever-present.

Here's a little background on why a "retired" senior citizen is going to involve himself in CouchSurfing.com where the average age of surfers is under 30 years. In Artmail 105c (near the bottom), I told of a worrisome happening with passports I had while traveling in Thailand in 1978. Within that week, I had just made a "personal commitment to me" to end my classroom teaching career within three years and create a career involving international travel.

I taught only one more year then retired early in 1979. Almost ten years before, I, with a few top science students, experienced a demonstration of the ARPANET. I had made three Europe trips in the 1970s and had visited O'ahu and Big Island...I knew that I was into traveling. And I was also aware of the developing Internet, a technology which would eventually be available to the populace. I was traveling alone on that Asia trip in 1978.

By 1983, I had developed a system to later utilize the Internet...before I had a computer. I called it Intro-Net to be used as an introduction to the Internet for travelers. (I notice that most of the people signing up with CouchSurfing tend to be of the creative/adventurous type). From an Intro-Net newsletter:

...

...

...

There was a bulletin board which was a forum in which Intro-Net members "could establish communications with fellow network members concerning travel dreams, information and possibilities."

Anyway, now, with the establishment of CouchSurfing.com, many of those dreams that I had back then of using the Internet and a personal website while traveling, are becoming realities. Even though I am pretty old, I still want to use the Internet in some of ways that I had imagined.

The new travel service was...here read it yourself:

I moved to Kaua'i in 1983. I knew it was my paradise when I first visited in 1982. I had reasoned that with the satellites and the Internet available to common individuals, an individual could choose his perfect place in the whole world to live and work from. That's where I'm living right now...less than 200 meters from the beach on the west side of Kaua'i. In 1982, I was also considering Rarotonga, which was in my chosen latitudes (between 20 and 25 degrees north or south...and I wanted to be on an island). I had some "official" correspondence that year then visited the Cook Islands twice in 1985 with an Apple //c doing Intro-Net introductions. (The main thing that was missing for me on Rarotonga was good bodysurfing).

Skip ahead to Polihale in 1992. I was doing a thing with boomerangs out of a perfect boomerang-flying place...Polihale...making a network of owners of special boomerangs.

...

..........

....

Then a September 11th remembered by most Kauaians...1982. Hurricane Iniki caused a lot of damage all over the island and made for a lot of changes in the people. I was spending most of my time at Polihale in those days, also. Polihale State Park was officially closed. I made a hidden campsite, Tumu Nu,(a little past the middle of the page), just outside of the park...hidden from the officials. That's another story, but a lot of people from all over the world visited Polihale and many visited Tumu Nu. We shared high-quality time. There was the 'traditional' exchange of names and addresses and promises to return to Polihale and if I ever get to___________, I will be taken on a tour of, etc. So, I used an Intro-Net idea instead of matchbook covers, slips of paper. I was living there in Tumu Nu so it was easy to keep a notebook. I signed on where I stayed in Pangkor Island in 1978.

AlohaRangs of Hawaii is sponsoring this Couch Station. (No problem, I am their boomerang pro and creative director). I still have some of the Rainbow Rangs for Maui from the 1990s. (Rather than boomerangs, I'm working more with palm frond faces, now).

It's the 17th...about 1:30 in the afternoon. I can hear the voices and laughter of good times under Greg's trees. I'm waiting for a phone call ("within 24 hours my Internet server will call me after they get their problem worked out," then I can get back online). I've been offline and "no longer able to have DSL using the Windows 98" in my Gateway notebook since yesterday morning about 4:30 am. I had to go to the library to send an email to Mich, the CouchSurfer, before he began his around-the-world flight from Paris tomorrow or the next day.

But, that's OK. I have something very interesting to read while relaxing here in paradise...a block and a half to the beach. I am very impressed with Tempski's book...I'm only half through. She was born in 1890 and died in 1943...check it out and learn a bit about what makes Hawaii a different kind of state...from then to now and on and on...

When I was teaching in Ojai, Maxine Tempski, was a teacher in the same district.

(Kolo dropped by for a beer and to talk story. He just left. I'm waiting for the PFP's paint to dry in the other room. It's now 3:00 pm...no phone call yet).

Anyway, back then, Maxine had asked me if I had heard of her relatives or ancestors in Hawaii. I had said "no" at the time. Since then, with all my Polynesia reading, I've read references to the von Tempskis in Hawaii, but this is the first time I've read what a von Tempski had to say about life in Hawaii...Maui in particular. I wonder if Maxine is still teaching in Ojai. If I could get online, and do a search in the school district via the Internet, I could find out. But, I'm listening to an old Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgearld cd playing in the old HP in the other room. Now, I have something to put in this webpage and can start making Artmail 116. I haven't been taking many photos, but I will be introducing Mich, from Paris...He won't believe Kaua'i is real. Lucky I live Kaua'i.

Aloha, Art
