This will be a page from the past...from my year 2000 trip to the Cook Islands. Scott MacDonald (behind me in the photo) had gone to Aitutaki in 1999 and was very impressed with the lagoon cruise package:

He wanted to do it again in 2000 and for me to experience it with him. I had planned to take photos of Aitutaki sometime so I went with him, but I stayed overnight, rented a motorcycle and traveled around the main island of the atoll where the inhabitants reside. That part of Aitutaki is the edge of the volcano from which the atoll formed. It rises to an elevation of about 300 feet at its highest point.

Early the next morning, I wanted to climb to the highest point and take photos of the sunrise from there. I didn't scout it out in the daylight so I wasn't able to find my way in the dark. I walked around to the lagoon side and took these photos of the sunrise:

After I got the rented motorcycle, I headed back past the airport to the other side of the lagoon from where I took the sunrise photos. Before I got to the airport, I shot these photos back toward the highest point and Paradise Cove and straight out to sea:
