This is the road that leads to the large jetty built by the U.S. military during World War 2. The airstrip was also built by the U.S. (There were about 1000 lucky U.S. troops stationed on Aitutaki which did not become a battle zone).

This group from Rarotonga was on the lagoon cruise the day before partying bigtime.

I went out to the end of the jetty and took photos of Aitutaki from one end to the other. In the photo above you can see the motus across the lagoon.

Here is where I got a flat tire.

I walked the motorcycle back to Tautu looking for a telephone. A man in his yard asked me where I was going. I told him my problem and he offered to make a phone call for me. We waited in his yard for the rental man to come with another tire. It was a long wait because the man first went to Mr. Manapori's brother's house in Vaipae and of course didn't find me. I very much appreciated Mr. Manapori's aloha. Meitaki (thank you). I took Mr. Manapori's photo and was going to mail a copy to him, but there was a problem with my printer and the photo was awful. Anyway, here are the photos:

One of the sites that I wanted to visit was Te Poaki O Rae Marae. A marae is a religeous structure similar to a Hawaiian heiau. The meaning is "The Stone of Rae" and it has volcanic rocks facing a main pillar. Usually stones in mauae are not so large.
