The idea was born...
It was Thanksgiving Day in 1995, at Polihale beach, when the palm frond mask idea first came to me. The festivities were happening at the Double-Burner Pavilion.

I had a message to relay to Ingeborg, a German traveler and friend, before she got out of the car she was
parking. Near the car, I noticed a broken-off palm frond base looking up at me through two dark smudges for eyes.
I picked it up, held it in front of my face and said, "Look, Ingeborg, a mask!" She wasn't impressed, so I tossed it down. Several hours later I passed the face looking up at me again. After some contemplation I took it and seven other palm frond bases home to my studio in Kekaha for later experimentation.
The first face became a completed mask in a variation of the Kona-style Hawaiian Ku image. The next seven were makaweli masks; makaweli are glaring, threatening eyes and characteristic mouth shape. The masks are painted in acrylic over gesso, then finished with acrylic clear.

My life here in Paradise gives me many time-spending options. Of course, Polihale, boomerangs, and bodysurfing
are of the "top priority" class. My art work is "top priority" too, but there many aspects of my art, of which
Polihale Palm Frond Faces are but one branch pointing to many possibilities, some of which I am taking time to explore.
