Aloha all...Happy Holidays...

I decided to start painting on coconut fiber, again. I wanted to paint my granddaughter, Lauren's, 4-1/2-year-old, smiling face from a photo taken of her on Rarotonga this fall. Of the 36 photos I shot in December until the 15th when I went to Polihale, 29 of them were concerning Lauren's evolving Christmas gift as I painted it. I mailed it on the the 15th, then drove out to Polihale to catch the sunset.

Earlier that day, I had opened an email from my son which had two drawings that Lauren made attached:

"...one she drew when we went to see [sic] a choir sing, and it is a drawing of a choir singing!..."

......

She saw and drew a lot of smiles...but, what about that sad face in the middle? Was Lauren seeing, hearing, or "feeling" something else from that individual in the choir?

......

" the other is of a choir soloist (director?) and a spider (?) and a few other guys to boot."

......

Lauren sure likes smiles. Another budding artist in the Family.

......

It just happens that in the early morning of November 16th, I decided what my Christmas present for Lauren would be this year...a painting of her smiling face. I would paint it on cocopalm fiber as I did with the PF Greenbacks. Painting a portrait is a pretty big bite for me to take as an "artist." I have had no art training (though my children are artists with varying degrees of training). I have been doing experimental painting with acrylics on coconut palm fiber for one year...that is, painting on both sides!

That day, I began preparations of a piece of cocopalm fiber. I didn't think to take photos of the fiber until the 18th.

......

The painting-fun starts from this point on. Painting on cocopalm fiber is an adventure.

......

From December 1st until the 15th, all the photos I took were at 15B. The majority are of the progress of the painting...both sides. I decided to have more than just her face, so I gave her long hair in the back...and more than just a face. [I'll post my final photos of the painting before mailing after Christmas, but you can see the enlarged "smile" below.]
