Rarotonga, Cook Islands

...

Black Rock.

...

I have years 1999 and 2000's photos of Rarotonga on old pages HERE if you want to make some comparisons. I was in Rarotonga in 1985, 1999, 2000, and 2004. In my opinion, Rarotonga has changed more from 2000 to 2004 than from 1985 to 2000...and more disturbing changes will be upcoming. In the map from 1999 below, Black Rock is located at #32. What follows are some view of the westside.

...

When Tashi and I checked out Black Rock, traditional fun was being had by kids:

One day we went up to the highest place paved roads go...to the Rarotonga Hospital.

The hospital's parking lot.............................................A nearby tree.

Then we hiked up the hill for some shots of Rarotonga's westside.

Rarotonga International Airport.

[I was planning to work on this Artmail all day, but I got a perfect table for the other room's computer given to me. So, I've been moving furniture and setting up. I will be continuing later.]

At my age, this was an automatic photo-shooting place.

In 1985, at 2:00 am, a 747 would land at Rarotonga airport then take off at 4:00 am. The big adrenalin rush in those days before the fence was built preventing access, was to lie down with one's head just touching the concrete of the runway (where there is black now) and watch the 747 land right over one's head. It certainly isn't allowed any more.

...

We rode on the 1000 year old Ara Metua. The Ara Metua was ordered built around the island out of coral blocks about 1000 years ago by a famous chief, Toi. Rarotonga is the only Polynesian island with such a structure. When I rode on it in 1985, some parts were covered with soil...the rest has asphalt...now all asphalt.

...

.........

...

The Ara Metua runs past the Rarotonga Golf Course which is pretty unique with different hazards to encounter...

Also, on the Ara Metua, is Mike Tavioni's studio. First, find out who he is HERE.

There's Tashi.

[I decided that I would try to get back into uploading new Artmails about once a week. So, Artmail 124 will be more about what is happening currently. Tomorrow, I am going out to Polihale for Thanksgiving with my traditional potato salad. (I still have to make it, but the potatoes and eggs are boiled. It's going to take me a while to finish getting the Rarotonga photos into Artmail 123s. I will update those Artmails into the future.]

...

[It's November 28th. I still have a lot of computer catch-up to be doing plus learning how to use a different photo-paint program to give the PFPs voices.]

The following photos were taken on different days at Rarotonga's waterfront:

Below are a couple of photos with links to stories about what is pictured for those who might be interested:

...

Across the road from the airport is the cemetery known as the "The Brych Yard" or "The Brickyard." This is where patients of Milan Brych, a cancer quack, are buried. A link to a website with more information than you want to know about it is found HERE.

...

Tom Neale is buried iin The Brych Yard. His story can be found HERE.

...

I will continue putting Raro photos into Artmail 123c.
