It looks like this is the month of the couchsurfers. Dave, the band teacher, stopped by a few nights and on one of them made an ono mango salsa...from scratch. I missed shooting photos of him in the process but here is the only photo of that mango salsa:

My next couchsurfer, Caro, is from France...a student from Lyon, vacationing in Honolulu while her boyfriend finishes his internship there. She wanted to visit Kaua'i and did her first couchsurfing with me.

Caro was not able to get the flight on Wednesday, so she decided to take the first flight on Thursday and stay until Saturday afternoon. I told her that I would take the bus meet her at the airport, then she could rent a car with which I would drive her on a scenic tour to the north shore and Ke'e Beach at the end of the road.

The next morning, I took the first bus. I had a 20-minute wait for the second bus at Kukui Grove...plenty of time to buy a bottle of water and get some quarters to use for bus fares. There was a long, long line and only one checker and, of course, the woman ahead of me had some kind of mistake which took up time. When I got outside, I saw the missed shuttle bus going around the corner. So, I was a half-hour late and Caro was waiting and wondering.

It turned out, on that week day morning, there were no compact rental cars available anywhere. We took the bus to Kekaha instead and got in my old, questionable Tercel and some munchies and headed up to Koke'e Park and the Waimea Canyon and Kalalau Overlooks. (Trusty Tercel made the trip fine and no over-heating).

I took my camera mainly to shoot photos of Caro photographing the views she wanted to capture, so there are only a few view shots that I took. A disaster happened the next day...Caro was deleting some of the photos she had taken to make room on her card for more photos and, somehow, deleted all the photos she had taken up to that time! First time I could see Ni'ihau and Lehua from this overlook.

The gate was open from the Kalalau Lookout to the end of the road and it had been paved...no more potholes. And there is a real parking lot at the end instead of dirt with mud holes like before.
