......
It's May 23rd. I added photos of views from Pu'uhinahina Lookout at the end of Artmail 146a.
....
....
My plan was to stop at another lookout and photograph Waipo'o Falls then go to Pu'u Lua (the lake). That's not what happened...I guess we were talking and I missed the lookout for the falls...decided not to turn around but take the turnoff to Pu'u Lua. I didn't have this map with me and I thought it was at the 13 mile marker. Wrong! The turnoff is at the 12 mile marker. But we were already on the road past the marked cabins. It connected with another recently bulldozed road which led to another and we ended up at the Boy Scout Camp via a "new road" from the back.

It's the 25th. I'm still putting up the Koke'e and Waimea Canyon photos.

You can barely see Waipo'o Falls way back in the left photo.
......
You can see it better in this zoom shot.

See the helicopter?

A tree on the edge.
......
A good time to experience the Waimea Canyon view is early in the morning before the helicopters start flying. As the sun rises on the other side of the island, the canyon "lights up." Before Hurricane Iniki in 1992, I would sometimes suggest to visitors who had not seen the Waimea Canyon, to view it at daybreak before the helicopters start. It would still be dark when we would go up to that tree at the edge and sit down with backs toward the unseen canyon, looking back down the hill from where we came. The visitor wouldn't know we were next to the canyon yet. When the light was right, I would say that I was going back to the car to get something and that the visitor(s) should close their eyes, count to 25, then turn 180 degrees around while still sitting in the same place by that tree, then open their eyes. It would look as if half of the world dropped away and the view would be overwhelming. I would leave the visitor for a while with plenty of time to contemplate.

Orange tree trunks?!?
.....
I don't know what the orange tree trunks are about. I know some lichens are that color and lichen can grow on trees. Is it a fungus? There's not much undergrowth. I wonder if the authorities tested some kind of herbicide in there and this is the result. I'll ask around...maybe someone will explain it to me. Have a closer look...

Maybe that's its natural color....?

The State Bird of Hawaii is the endangered Nene goose. Nenes rule on Kaua'i. They take their time and people wait...

Just another roadside attraction...ugh.

That was quite a day...a nice break from the routine. That will do it for this Artmail.
