Surfing my couch at 15B
You are going to love the beauty and power of Kaua'i. I have been a beach person all my life and fell in love with Kaua'i the first day I arrived on July 20, 1982. Now, in my senior years, I am still living in my paradise, doing what I choose to do, when I choose to do it. I have been living on Kaua'i since 1983 and I enjoy showing off the beauty of Kaua'i to visitors. (I am not interested in checking out the world class luxury resorts or fine restaurants around the island...OR shopping!! Those things can be done by visitors with no problems or help from me). Kekaha has a fine beach with life guard and is the gateway to Polihale Beach and to Koke'e and the Waimea Canyon Lookouts and many trails.
Because of where I live, I get more couchsurfing hosting requests than I choose to handle. (I have other projects going on which require solitude). So, I have limited myself to one CS-hosting per month. I will, additionally, have one or two "sleepovers" which are not as complete as my "hostings."
My place is a small 1-bedroom apartment. I do have some camping equipment couchsurfers can use at Polihale State Park, my favorite beach, but it has been closed since December..(Road to Polihale repair nears completion...Update. Another article.)
I had a broken ankle and recovery period since September and I have not been hosting CouchSurfers. My profile page says that I am "traveling at the moment." During this time, I have been thinking about how to begin hosting CouchSurfers again in Kekaha Ha'aheo 15B. In the meantime I have received classmates.com emails about former students visiting my guest book, etc. etc. Though I haven't been active in Classmates.com, I am going to do something different...introducing the couchsurfing concept to them...
A lot of former students who remember me would not consider me as having been a "typical high school teacher" back then. (Long story...) They might be a little curious about what that teacher ended up doing after he retired in 1979.
I was into beaches and bodysurfing during my biology-teaching days, too...but did not include boomerangs until 1985. Anyway, I plan on making those Classmates a welcome page initially summarizing where I live. They will be linked to go to this.page. I will reactivate my CouchSurfer hosting for former students, classmates, etc. who go to couchsurfing.com, join then "surf my couch" for a Kaua'i visit and vacation. (I'll have to update my CS Profile, too).
It's a time-consuming task to figure out how the above could work out then get it woven into the "tapestry" of my life's senior years and a little history, too, written on to one Artmail page. My thinking is that at my age (76 in July), I don't need to be making a lot of new "CS friends" from all over the world. It makes more sense to me to re-visit with old friends and the former students from "our past lives." We put in a lot of hours in each others' presence...we all learned and memories were made (and forgotten?) during those student/teacher days. So, those are the people I would like visiting me and "surfing my couch." Hopefully they would have no more expectations than any other CouchSurfers.

***INFORMATION for Visitors***

It is best to have a rental car to explore many of the sites around Kaua'i. Many of the couchsurfers like getting older rental cars at Island Cars. (I do not drive my old Tercel to Lihue, but I have taken the bus to the airport to meet the couchsurfer that I am hosting...then they obtain a rental car and I may become the tour driver).
The Kauai Bus is available during most days if your pack is not too big: Kaua'i Bus schedules:
A permit is required for camping at Polihale State Park and other state parks. State website about permits
You can camp around Kauai in county parks. Information on Kauai county park camping

I first had my website in 1997. One day, I received an email from a college student, Renee, who had searched for her last name and came up with mine and my website. We exchanged emails throughout the year. To make a long story short, it turns out that Renee's grandfather's favorite uncle (whom he was named after) was my grandfather. When her vacation started, she visited me.
