...

The boats a-rockin'.

It's still light, but it must be after five o'clock. The alarm is still clanging at the video store on my right. I miss a lot of the storm's sounds because of it. The wind is strong, but mostly steady.

Oh, oh. I spoke too soon.

It's somewhat of a mess in the direction of Big Save. A debris-filled "lake" is in front. During the eye I used my camera, but I don't know if it will work. A guy from KUAI couldn't believe I survived in my car. [The KUAI radio station was behind the Eleele Clinic. The people in there came out during the eye and saw me out there…dry!] Glen Silva, at his wrecked service station asked "How did you stay so dry?" [I explained my air cushion theory to him.] He didn't check it out tho'. It's now pau.

It's later and the clanger is still clanging!

A lone Kauai Electric or whatever pickup cruised by on the highway. A palm frond blew down and landed in its bed. [It was amazing to watch…the pickup was moving and the palm frond was about 40 feet in the air being carried by the wind. It then floated down and landed in the bed of still moving pickup.]

It's getting darker. You know, sometimes I don't even hear the clanger, but I sure do now. Branches are all over. It's still blowin' and rockin'.

Let's check the radio…Nothing on. I can't get Oahu. The sky is a solid dark gray.

I'm watching the palms swaying, bending, then snapping back to start swaying again…

Clang, clang, clang…..Here are the big gusts, but still lighter than before. So far, so good.

Later: Iniki is still blowing hard. I've been watching, but I've just now noticed the clanging. Not much rain before (after the eye), but now it's starting and Iniki is still blowing.

I'm on my last four beers. I have to pee again. No problem; I'm in my house.

CRASH! What was that?

The boat's not rocking as much as before the eye. I'm at a slightly different angle to the wind and my barrier. I'm interested in seeing how my sleeping spot at Polihale made out. I probably could have stayed there. I don't think that the waves would have reached it, but if they were about to, I would go up to the water tank. That's where I was as the storm was coming in. [My Polihale sleeping spot would have been fine.]

A canned three-bean salad and crackers will do for a dinner start.

Still no radio, but I think Iniki might be letting up. Maybe she's on her way. Aloha.

I got a coffee cup from the KUAI guys.

It's almost dark. I couldn't go to the small boat harbor because the telephone poles and wires are all over the road. Martin Steel is blown away.

Visited with Pirate Ray and Chris then spent the night in my car where I rode out the last half of Iniki.

[That's the end of the notes. After Iniki times were something else...maybe for another time.]

PAU.
