Between 1987 and 1992, while bodysurfing into the backwash wave at Polihale with my hurricane/air cushion hypothesis in mind, I toyed with the idea of being in that collision spot during a hurricane. The building doesn't move, so the cushion would get a little larger or smaller depending on the force of the wind. I could be in my car making observations of the oncoming hurricane through the windows and know when to duck down behind more protection if something was heading my way. (I considered whole roofs flying off houses and smashing cars flat when landing).

While flying boomerangs, one is playing with invisible air currents. Not really wind, but light breezes not more than five or so miles per hour. Hurricanes are at the extreme other end of the spectrum of wind playing. The hurricane/air cushion idea kept popping into my mind, but would I be foolish enough to do the experiment during an actual hurricane? I didn't think so.

Back in 1992, I would go to Kauai Community College when I wanted to use a computer for a project. The afternoon and night before, I would stay by Niumalu Park near the harbor. There's the Malibu in the photo, but not in my just-out-of-the-park sleeping spot. ("Ranger danger"):

I was planning on spending September 10th at KCC, and then I would go back to Polihale for the night. That morning, I was at the phone in Nawiliwili small boat harbor, telling Scott MacD that Hurricane Iniki had gone on to the west, south of and beyond Kauai. I was at KCC all day and I didn't listen to the radio on the way back to Polihale.
