I was looking for something else when I found one of the copies of my September 11, 1992 Hurricane Iniki notes that I made to send to a few relatives and friends on the mainland a few weeks after the hurricane. The original notes were scrawled through many pages of a stenographer notebook. I'm sure I have it stored somewhere, but I couldn't find it easily. I decided not to search more just so I could take photos of it. I know that it is somewhere in 15B.
I read the four typed pages that generated "instant video replays" in my mind…even sounds. I decided that I wanted to put those notes in an Artmail…for the record. I realized that I should put in some background information. I took photos of the four pages, but they would not be as easy to read online. I decided to have both, but the re-copied notes would have explanations interrupting the flow. They are important because what I did was an experiment that I may have been foolish to attempt. Part of the experiment had to do with a recent bodysurfing "stunt?" that I could sometimes do at Polihale.
Before Iniki, I had mainly been living at Polihale Beach, bodysurfing, flying boomerangs, doing artwork and socializing with friends and music. I was able to move my "Malibu bedroom" to many camping areas around Kauai. There are "homeless" and "houseless" individuals living on Kauai. The system puts both into one category: "Homeless." I was included in a survey under "homeless" in spite of my objections and explanations. Many people prefer being "in nature" at night with the moon, stars, and planets and sound of the surf reflecting off the cliffs. It is a very comfortable and healthy way to live. Storms happen and are experienced while making observations of nature's forces doing its thing "in the flesh."
