Avatiu, right next to Avarua's westside, is where the harbor ('harbour' here) is. Avarua has a harbor, too, but it isn't the main one. This certainly is not what one would call a busy harbor, but it is the busiest one in the whole country. The New Zealand Army Engineers keep the harbor open through the coral reef. These photos are from two different days.

I'm not sure, but I think that this patrol boat constitutes the Cook Islands Navy.

Hardy yacht people sail into Avitiu Harbor and stay a while.
.
Check it out...they have to be hardy to sail the Balmacara all the way from Missoula, Montana. There was also a boat from Austin, Texas at the other end, but I think sailing from Missoula would be tougher.

That cargo ship in the background is one of two that take supplies to the outer Cook Islands. These vessels are the means by which travelers may visit the northern Cooks and Cook Islanders travel from island to island on them. It's more comfortable to sleep on the deck as the local travelers do.
.
Here are some shots of the harbor from different places.

Hand-held zooms tend to blur, but you can still get a closer look.
