Couchsurfers, Chris and Lew, from O'ahu, arrived on Kaua'i for a three-day visit to the island. We met at the Waimea Big Save Deli for coffee and to talk story. They live near Sandy Beach, which is a primo bodysurfing beach on that island. They lived on a 45-foot sailboat for 23 years and she had two boys during that time. They sailed mainly in Polynesia.

From Arizona, another Pacific traveler is Cathy R. K., a friend and schoolmate from Alameda High, sister of my classmate, Hal R. She is on her way to Fiji and Vanuatu for about six weeks. Cathy used to live on Kaua'i and the last time we had seen each other was at Polihale in Tumu Nu in 1993. She was visiting friends during her three-day visit. On the 27th, she came to Kekaha, and we drove out to Polihale to talk story in one of the small pavilions while enjoying ahi and squid poke, local-style.

Then, on July 1st, Leonardo, one of the four founders of couchsurfing.com, "surfed my couch"...futon, actually. His main objective was to go into the Kalalau Valley, to kickback and relax for a week...a needed break. He lives on O'ahu and hadn't been to Kaua'i before. Aloha Airline had some $19 interisland early flight and he had a ticket. His ride to the Honolulu airport overslept, so he had to pay the extra bucks for a later flight. I didn't know all this because I was already on the road to Kauai's airport.

Leo wasn't on the 6:35 am arriving plane, nor the next. I gave up on waiting at 9:00 am and went to Wal-Mart to buy three more plastic storage boxes. Leo had been trying to phone me, but no answer. Shortly after I got back to 15B, the phone rang. It was Leo. He was walking toward Lihue with his heavy backpack. He hitch hiked and in five minutes got a ride that took him to about a mile from 15B. He phoned me and I drove to get him.

Kapt. Kirk had phoned me the day before and told me that a lot of people were at Polihale for the Independence Day weekend, but he had a camp set up across from the Cubby Hole and invited us out. So, Leo and I got some beer and grinds and drove our to Polihale.
